There is a speed control behind the bottom louver to set the fan speeds. The fan itself is heat activated after the firebox is up to temperature.

Stylish & Functional Empire Fireplace Insert - Good Buy!
This fireplace insert looks great and works well. The optional thermostat is a nice addition for regulating the temperature. The blower is a little noisy, but it works as intended.
