Is there any way to deflect the heat off the wall above the unit?

Empire does offer the Empire 28 to 48-inch Adjustable Fireplace Hood Heat Deflector Kit, which can be surface-mounted on the area above the fireplace. It is 4-1/2 inches deep.

That is due to that unit being a special low (10,000) BTU unit. They have other versions with more BTUs that would have a higher flame.

Can you wrap this fireplace with your own trim? Such as wood?
