The pilot light goes out or attempts to ignite while the fireplace is already on.
For your Empire 30 Inch Boulevard Slim Line Vent Free Linear Gas Fireplace, which features an Intermittent Pilot Ignition (IPI) system, here are troubleshooting steps if the pilot light goes out or attempts to ignite while the unit is on:

1. **Check Gas Pressure:** Insufficient gas pressure can cause the pilot to extinguish or falter. Refer to page 6 of the installation guide for guidance on checking gas pressures. The acceptable Natural Gas Inlet Pressure range is 5" to 10.5" WC, and for Propane, it is 11" to 13" WC.
2. **Clean Pilot Igniter/Sensor:** A buildup of dirt on the pilot igniter or sensor can impede proper ignition or cause the pilot to go out. Cleaning the pilot assembly is recommended. Consult page 45 of the installation guide for maintenance, which includes cleaning the Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) pilot by using canned air to remove debris from the igniter holes.
3. **Verify Ground Connections:** Ensure the pilot assembly is properly grounded, as poor grounding can lead to ignition failures.
4. **Mitigate Drafts:** Air currents within the firebox can extinguish the pilot flame. Identify and reroute any drafts from the room or wall that may be affecting the pilot. Avoid directing fans at the fireplace.
5. **Inspect Pilot Sensor:** If the pilot sensor is bent, it may require adjustment or replacement for correct operation.

The fireplace's IPI system incorporates a safety sensor designed to detect the pilot flame. If the pilot flame extinguishes for any reason, this sensor will automatically shut off the gas supply to the pilot assembly, preventing the accumulation of unburned gas.
