How To Measure Your Existing Fireplace
Fireplace inserts are designed to fit into an existing fireplace. Some inserts will fit in a wide range of fireplace sizes. So, how do you measure your fireplace for a fireplace insert? Let's discuss why it's important to get a fireplace insert that fits!
Typically, fireplace inserts come with a metal surround that acts as a frame, covering the gap between the insert and the fireplace's opening. It should be noted that you do not want a fireplace insert that is too small or too large: If the opening is too small, the insert will not fit, and if it is too large, the surround will not be wide enough to cover the gap between the fireplace insert and the opening of the existing fireplace.
Most fireplace inserts are designed for traditional fireplace openings made from stone or brick, also called masonry fireplaces. Finding an insert for a manufactured fireplace will be more difficult. Many manufacturers forbid using fireplace inserts with their fireplaces or limit the number of approved inserts.
So, now that we've covered the why of measuring for your fireplace insert, let's talk about the how. When measuring your fireplace, you'll start by measuring the existing fireplace. This includes the width and height of the fireplace's front and back. It might be surprising, but sometimes fireplace openings taper – the opening at the front is bigger than the width of the back of the fireplace. Having those measurements and the depth will allow you to get the closest fit for your new fireplace insert.
