Worth the extra money, but not without issues.

It’s a very nice fire grate, and I expect it to last much longer than the typical welded bar versions. It also does a very good job of holding the coals without restricting air flow. The hardware it came with leaves something to be desired, though. (It requires assembly, in case you missed that.) Namely, the bolts seem to be a smaller size than they really should be, so some of carriage bolts spun in the square holes. I’d also expect the small size to make them more susceptible to heat related erosion. In the end, I replaced everything with larger stainless hardware, but I’m an OCD mechanical engineer. YMMV

Pros

Looks great Works well Should last

Cons

Fussy assembly Unimpressive hardware

Cradles the wood, and burns it completely

I have had this grate for 5 years in a 30" fireplace. This is the one I got after trying 3 others, all of which had large openings between the steel grate members. These others did not do well keeping the burning embers in place, due to the 4" or so gaps between the steel supports, So, the burning wood fell through the spaces onto the bottom of the firebox. BUT, this Saf-T-Grate has very small openings (holes and slots) in a nearly solid curved cast iron bed, which contains all of the burning wood and embers, which keeps the fire going to the very last ember. Nothing falls through the grate, and the design allows for correct breathing of the fire. I recently replaced the 30" wide fireplace with a new 42" wide x 30" high model, with a new stone hearth and rock-faced wall from hearth to 10' ceiling. I added another 8" wide center section to the original 22" wide grate, to now be a 29" wide grate. This fits the new 42" wide fireplace perfectly.

Pros

Breathes well. Holds even the smallest burning pieces and embers, without any falling through the grate. Burns wood completely. Cast iron construction holds up well with no deterioration.

Cons

None

Most Durable Grate Out There

This is by far the most durable product like it on the market. Over the last thirty or so years my parents have literally had thousands of fires in it and have never had a single problem with it. I know of other grates requiring almost annual replacement, but not this one! This item is a must have!
