Is there any reason why I couldn't cut legs to lower mantel?
You could trim the legs down if you wanted. I would just advise to be mindful of the clearance needed from your fireplace opening height and distance to the mantel shelf. If you have a manufactured fireplace, this clearance would be listed in your manual.
