Customer Q&A with Product Specialists

Ed T. from Gainesville, GA asked:
I have a Majestic triple wall chimney installation from the 70s or 80s, and the termination cap was damaged by a falling tree. Is it possible to get a new one? If not, are there any details or suggestions available for a fabricator to create a replacement? Thanks.

Termination caps for factory-built chimney systems are not universal; each cap is tested and listed as part of a specific chimney system. Therefore, the correct top depends on the specific Majestic chimney model installed, not solely on diameter or shape. To help you find the correct cap, we need more model information. Every section of a listed chimney should have a UL data label near one end indicating the manufacturer and model number. Additionally, the fireplace itself typically has a data plate located inside the opening or behind the lower louver panel with its make and model. The inner flue diameter is also helpful. We do still stock components for the Majestic S Series triple wall system, including termination tops with an 8-inch inner diameter. However, we cannot confirm compatibility with your 1970s or 1980s installation without seeing the labels. Many Majestic chimneys from that era have been discontinued. Hearth and Home Technologies now manages the records for all legacy Majestic parts and can identify your specific system and the availability of an OEM top. We can check with them once we have your system's information. If the original top is no longer manufactured, aftermarket air-cooled chimney caps are available for triple-wall pipes in various inner diameters. We can explore these options with you once we know your pipe model and diameter. Our Virtual Chimney Cap Assistant can guide you through the pipe mount options: Virtual Chimney Cap Assistant. Regarding fabrication, we cannot provide drawings or specifications for a custom-made cap. The termination cap is a tested and listed component of the chimney assembly, and a shop-made cap would not be a listed part, potentially voiding the chimney's listing. We would prefer to help you find an approved, listed cap for your system. Please reply with the model number from your pipe label and the fireplace data plate, and we will identify your options.

It may be the unit needs cleaning and servicing, or it very well could be some parts are no longer working as they should. With a unit that old some may not be available any longer. So it might be time to replace the unit.

Unfortunately, there is no alternative to the SK8 elbows. We apologize for any inconvenience.
