I have a Valor gas fireplace that has worked well for several years, however this season after changing batteries the control unit will not function... the remote and receiver can be sync'd (beep signals) and the remote shows symbols, but nothing more.
The control unit is a Mertik Maxitrol G6R-R3AN. See photos attached. Can I buy just a new receiver and plug into the existing set up? or does the entire system have to be purchased and installed? (Nearest installer is an hour away.)

You would need to purchase both as they are not sold separate.

This type of remote will sync directly with the control module included with the larger GV60 spark ignition control system manufactured by Mertik-Maxitrol. This ignition system (the valve, module and remote) is commonly included with several gas hearth systems we offer from various manufacturers, but we do not offer this remote by itself.
