Wanting the top of the line for your home's fiery centerpiece? This updated version of the Matrix Wood Insert will seduce you with an average particle emission rate as low as 1.54 g/h. The latest modifications made to this box are well in tune with the industry standards required for 2020. Although it retains a unique style that is both massive and sleek, the door mechanism has been reviewed to make it more functional. Adding a set of intermediate trim panels may be required to complete your masonry hearth. Always the same legendary Osburn quality.
Do you sell the Osburn 3500 insert? Also, what's the most important spec to consider to achieve the best bang for the buck? BTU rating? Firebox size?
1 Answer
Yes, we also sell the Osburn 3500 insert. The most important data to look at when shopping inserts is the listed heated area. For example, the Osburn 3500 insert is listed to heat up to 2,700 square feet. The actual heating capability will depend on the location of the appliance, insulation of the home, etc.

Is the bottom faceplate required for installation? Does the insert have legs or what does it rest on?
1 Answer
As you can see in the installation manual, the insert as shown has a bit of an elevated firebox, but a flat bottom so that the insert simply sits on the floor of the existing fireplace.

What gauge wire is needed for the blower motor? Will temperatures behind the insert be too high to locate an outlet there? If not, can it be hard-wired?
1 Answer
The blower includes its own cord, and an outlet may be installed within the masonry fireplace if permitted by local electrical codes. Most customers use an external outlet, however.

The Matrix insert requires a masonry fireplace at least 28 7/8" wide x 23 3/8" high x 19 5/8" deep. Please see page 32 of the installation manual for more details.
We purchased the Matrix insert for the modern look, large viewing glass, and the flush mounting fit of it.
The build quality seems to be excellent and the fit and finish of the door and all the trim pieces is good.
I've lit a couple dozen fires in it so far and only have one complaint involving the blower assembly. Every now and then some part of the assembly will start a loud vibration, so something must be loose. I haven't yet investigated the issue further.
The insert puts out plenty of heat. I live in a poorly insulated house with temps currently in the 20s overnight. The temperature will stay nice and comfortable inside.
Pros
Solid build quality
Good fit and finish
Modern look
Flush mount (if your fireplace is deep enough)
Cons
Blower motor assembly has a loud intermittent vibration.
