I'd like to order this mantel, but it states the shelf selection is either 48 or 56 inches in length. How can that be when the overall outside dimensions are 74"?
We apologize for the confusion, but the size selection for this mantel is not the shelf length, but rather the opening width of each. The 48-inch mantel has a total width of 66 inches while the 56-inch version has a total width of 74 inches.

Mantel Looks Great After Receiving 3rd One
Overall, we are very pleased with the Marshall mantel. It is built well and looks fantastic. I did put a light coat of paint on it to match the trim in the room, but I could have left it bare.It It is a little tricky to make sure the french cleat is at the correct height.
I would have given this a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the fact that the first two mantel's I received were so damaged that they were not able to be used. It was not until I received the 3rd one that it did not have defects. Actually, the shelf still has a smal dent on it but it is in the back. I think the packaging needs to be improved, even though there is a lot of cardboard and styrofoam in the pack. Some of the damage I beleive was evident prior to packing the mantel in the carton.

Looks great, easy to install, paint is optional

Packaging!! The first two were severely damaged. Some of the defects were in the same location which looks like things were rubbing. But there were also defects and damage that appeared to be in the parts prior to being packed.
Yes, I would recommend this item.
