Can this thermometer be used for single walled pipe?

This type of thermometer can technically be used with a single wall pipe, but it will not give the most accurate reading. The thermometer depends on the air space in between the walls of a double walled stovepipe to keep the face of the thermometer cool. As a result, the reading will be a bit higher than what it is calibrated for from the factory.
