How much better is the Viper GKF Extra Largeover the other Viper? On the Viper EL will you be able to enter through the clean out and make a 90 degree up a masonry chimney? Will a round brush be able to clean a square masonry chimney?
By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on December 5, 2011

    Answer:
The Viper GFK boasts a stand that allows the unit to stand on its own and does not need to be held to be used. This item would indeed be able to negotiate a 90 degree turn. A square brush is the ideal item to clean a square flue. A round brush cannot effectively reach and clean the corners of a square flue.

I have a 6 inch square brush that fits the Rutland fiberglass rod kit. I think it is 1/4". Can I find an adapter to fit this to the Viper system?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 13, 2013

    Answer:
In addition to the Viper adapters that I previously mentioned, you would also need the Rutland 1/4 Inch to 3/8 Inch Pipe Thread Reducer. This will allow you to adapt your 1/4 inch thread square brush to the 3/8 Viper adapter.

Is the rod 65 feet or 50 feet? Do I need a special end to attach a standard 6" square brush?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 7, 2013

    Answer:
This version of the Viper uses a 65 foot rod system. The system does require a pair of adapters for use with standard 3/8 brushes. The first is the Wohler 3/8 Inch Adaptor for Viper Chimney Cleaning Systems, while the other is the Wohler Brush Rod Connector for Viper Chimney Cleaning Systems.

Will an 8-inch Polly Brush go up my chimney? I have an oblong piece of pipe at the back of my stove and didn't know if that would affect anything.
By eFireplaceStore on January 30, 2015

    Answer:
Thank you very much for the photos. I see the rectangular flue collar and ovalized adapter you were describing. The poly brush from the Viper GFK system will indeed push through the adapter and up the chimney. There will definitely be resistance, but working the brush back and forth gently will allow it to push through.

How exactly does this system work? I am looking for a better way to clean my chimney without getting on my roof which is 30 feet up.
By eFireplaceStore on August 25, 2014

    Answer:
This system is a good alternative to standard threaded or button lock rod systems. The system relies on a dense, yet flexible nylon composite rod that can be fed from the bottom of the system upwards. It is a continuously unspooling system that is strong enough to be fed upward without bending. The system is also very resistant against splintering. It is recommended for use in conjunction with an ash vacuum, if it is primarily used on an open fireplace.

I recently purchased the viper mini as opposed to the Viper GFK. Will I still be able to clean my 8 x 8 square chimney flu from bottom to top or should I return it for the Viper GFK? The fiber glass rod on the mini seems pretty thin. I am not sure if it is going to allow me to push the square brush upwards. Can you tell me?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on February 3, 2014

    Answer:
The smaller Viper system is only ideally suited to exhaust ducts and smaller chimneys. It can handle a chimney up to 8 inches in diameter, but square brushes of this size can be very difficult to work with, especially if the chimney is over 15 feet tall. You may indeed be better off using the large system if your chimney is taller.

Should I use the star or poly brush on a 6" s.s. flexible liner and should it be the same size or bigger?

Example: 8" brush for 6"opening. If you are supposed to use the poly brush then in what application would I use the star brushes? From what I understand, the stars are used for terracotta and most terracotta flues are square or rectangle which I believe requires the attachment and corresponding brush.
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on February 25, 2014

    Answer:
You should indeed use a poly brush for a stainless liner, as the star brush is too aggressive and can damage the liner. The poly brush should indeed be two inches larger than any liner being swept. The star brushes are good for cleaning concrete or terracotta flues that are round, oblong, or oval in shape.

What is the recommended brush for the Viper system for cleaning 8" SS prefab chimney? Size? Material? (Stainless Steel or plastic) These are attached to woodburning prefab fireboxes.
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on August 6, 2012

    Answer:
It is recommended to use a polypropylene brush that is the same diameter as the I.D. of the prefab chimney you are cleaning. Depending on the current attachment you may have for the Viper system, a 1/4" or 3/8" pipe thread fitting may be needed as well.

I put a metal roof on our house and now it's too dangerous to get on top to clean wood burning chimney.
Would the Viper GFK do the job of using it from the bottom...4 levels going up to top:
cellar, 1st floor, 2nd floor, full size attic to the roof.
    Would this solve the problem?
I think the flue is the standard 9" square size.
Does the Viper GFK come with the brush, included?
By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on November 7, 2011

    Answer:
This unit would be ideal for your application. It does not come with any brushes nor does it readily accept square brushes. However, there is an adaptor available that allows this unit to be compatible with them. We could special order it for you. Please follow the below link to check out one of our square brushes.

Is there a flat wire brush for a 6 inch flue for the viper system?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 12, 2013

    Answer:
The brush to use for a 6 inch flue is the Viper Flat Wire Star Chimney Cleaning Brush. The 8 inch version is designed for a 6 inch flue. A pair of the brushes can be double stacked for maximum effectiveness.

By Allen from Bar Harbor, Maine on November 12, 2013
Is the 8" wire brush OK to use with a 6" square flue? I appreciate your help!
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 12, 2013

    Answer:
For a square flue, a brush adapter and square brush should be used, rather than the Viper round brushes. The adapters that should be used are the Wohler 3/8 Inch Adaptor for Viper Chimney Cleaning Systems and the Wohler Brush Rod Connector for Viper Chimney Cleaning Systems. You can then use a square brush, such as the 9-Inch x 9-Inch Square Master Sweep Round Wire Brush Head with 3/8-Inch NPT Connector to sweep your flue.
