Does this comply with Canadian building codes?
By Will M. on January 18, 2017
Answer:While we would not have any information regarding local code requirements for your municipality, this kit would likely not be acceptable to use as the "HT" or high-temp venting option offered by Superior is normally required as this chimney will meet the UL103HT testing requirements needed for installation in Canada. I will be able to put together a quote for the correct chimney components needed, if you are able to provide the total length needed, your roof pitch and how many floor levels the chimney will pass through prior to exiting the roof. If you need additional assistance with this, you may contact me (Will M.) directly at 1-800-203-1642 ext. 404.

I am installing a 42" vantage hearth fireplace in my basement. This is a wood burning fireplace, but I decided to just use gas logs and I wanted to be able to vent the logs. The fireplace has a 12" outlet (inner diameter). I want to be able to turn this as quickly as possible and exit through the concrete basement wall and terminate with a horizontal cap on the exterior of the concrete foundation wall. What are my options for pipe? I don't want to build a chimney I just want to run this horizontally out the foundation wall.

Answer:Unfortunately, there is not the option to vent a wood burning fireplace through an outside wall horizontally. Because the unit relies on the principal of natural draft to vent properly, it can only be vented vertically. It is possible to vent the unit through a wall to an exterior chimney, however it can only be done at a 30 degree angle. The manufacturer simply does not make the required components to vent it otherwise. The only gas unit that can be used for such an installation is a direct vent fireplace.
