Choosing the Correct Mount Type

This is your section's heading

A chimney cap is crucial to protecting your chimney and your home from the elements. However, only certain caps will work for your specific chimney. Chimney caps come in various shapes, sizes, and materials, so we've created a guide to help you find the right choice. You can also check out our Buyer's Guide for more helpful tips.

Consider the different mounting options available for your chimney cap for our first step. Not all mount types will work for your flue; some will serve you better than others, depending on your needs. We'll take a more in-depth look at your options below.

  • Surface Mount: Surface-mounted caps are secured by attaching directly to your chimney top. These caps feature a removable top lid for easy service access, and many include hinged base plates for installation on sloped surfaces. Custom sizes are available for surface-mount caps, allowing you to choose a narrower cap to cover only your chimney's tile or a wider cap to cover the entirety of your chimney top.

  • Surface (Multi-Flue): These caps are identical to their single-flue counterparts, but they cover more than one flue. The same benefits are available for multiple flues, including various custom sizes.

  • Tile/Outside Mount: Outside-mount chimney caps fit over the crown and attach directly to the body of the chimney to provide even better weather protection over other mount types. Similar to surface-mounting, this makes them a great option for covering multiple flues. This coverage also comes in handy for oddly shaped flues and chimney crowns. Many outside-mount caps are made to order, but stock models are available and typically fit various sizes. These stock models are generally more cost-effective than a custom cap.

  • Chimney Pipe Mount: These caps mount directly to your chimney pipe for a secure installation and are often easier to install than surface-mounted caps. These caps are available for single, double, and triple-wall chimney pipes. Solid-pack and air-insulated installations are also compatible. Some pipe-mounted caps can increase updraft to improve performance when operating in high-wind areas.

Next, we'll cover measuring your chimney crown or flue and what that entails. Follow the link to the next step!
