The most similar kit we offer is the Hargrove Propane Manual Only Safety Pilot Control, but please note that kit is only listed for use with Hargrove's 30" vented gas log sets.

We apologize for any confusion, but a gas valve would always be included with any pilot kit and required for gas to flow through to both the pilot and burner.

We purchased a ventless 28" Empire log set almost 20 years ago running a Honeywell VS8421d millivolt valve. I want a simple manual off/pilot/on control - preferably which allows me to vary the flame a bit 18-35K BTU. Will this item do the job for me?

You cannot substitute any parts originally included with a ventless gas fireplace and may only use the replacement parts listed in the product literature included with the fireplace. Since the original valve is no longer available as Honeywell no longer produces gas valves for ventless gas hearth systems, the only option we are able to offer is complete replacement.

Do I have to use a match to light the pilot each time to light fireplace?
Can I use a remote with this fireplace?

This pilot assembly would require a match to light it for the first time. However, during the heating season, when the fireplace/log set is not in use, you would just set this unit to pilot mode. This would allow you to simply turn the knob from Pilot to On to light the main burner. While the set is idle, you would have a standing pilot light.
This assembly is purely manual. There is no remote option. For a basic on/off remote valve kit, I'd recommend our Peterson APK-11 kit.
It would be wise to double check the size of your fireplace in comparison to the size of your log set. Add on control valves like these generally require additional space to operate safely.
