I am a mason building a custom Rumford-style masonry fireplace. My client wants to use a metal chimney after the smoke chamber. Based on my calculations, I need an 11 or 12-inch inner diameter pipe for equivalent square inches to a 13x13 clay flue liner, and I'm leaning towards 12 inches due to better draft characteristics of round flues. What would you suggest for the start of the chimney? I can finish my smoke chamber to a round outlet of the appropriate diameter, and I need a piece that will sit into the opening slightly and then connect to the standard pipe. What do you suggest? For a 12-inch inner diameter application, our Superior 12HT (FMI HT) chimney system is UL127 listed and rated to 2100°F. The Superior 12HT 12-Inch Inner Diameter High Temp Chimney Venting Pipe has a 12-inch inside diameter and an 18-inch outside diameter, with a round, double-wall construction (galvanized outer wall, stainless inner wall). For the starting piece at the masonry opening, the Superior 12HT High Temp Masonry Fireplace Anchor Plate and Collar Assembly is designed for exactly this application. It fits into a masonry fireplace opening and provides the starting collar onto which the 12HT round pipe sections connect directly, without needing a separate adapter. This is a proprietary FMI/Superior HT system, so the anchor plate and pipe sections should only be combined with other FMI/Superior HT components. We do not have the installation instructions for this specific anchor plate on file to confirm the exact collar throat opening dimensions or the required clearance to combustibles for a custom smoke chamber outlet. We are also unable to validate the equivalent flue area calculation itself; this determination should be confirmed with your local code officials and the manufacturer's published minimum sizing requirements.
