Unfortunately, per the manufacturer, SBI, you would have to use a 6" liner.

What is the optional fresh air intake, and does it affect the CFM of the blower?
The optional air intake kit is to draw burn air from outside, instead of from the interior of your home. It is typically used in homes that have very tight construction or insulation, or if the unit is being installed in a manufactured or mobile home. The blower is 144 CFM.

You would shovel out the ashes from the bottom of the insert.

Drolet Escape 1800-I Insert: Warm, Quiet & Efficient!
This insert is fantastic! The fan is incredibly quiet and retains heat for 8-10 hours, even overnight. I highly recommend it, but double-check surround sizes – I got a bigger one than I needed!
