This mantel is made with MDF, which is a medium-density fiberboard. This is an engineered wood made from thin panels of wood fiber, resin, and wax.

Can this be painted or stained a different color?

Yes, per the manufacturer, it could be painted but would entail some work. You would need to sand and prime it prior to painting. The closest mantel we carry in unfinished would be this Williamsburg Unfinished Mantel.

Can you put a vented fireplace insert in this mantel? If so, what size would fit?

This mantel is only the legs, breast board and shelf; it is not a full cabinet or enclosure. It can be installed around a built-in zero clearance fireplace, provided the proper clearances are maintained.Â

I have fake marble around my gas fireplace. It has developed a yellow stain on the top piece that I can't get off. Any suggestions?

Try this. Step 1. Wet the area with warm water. Step 2. Mix together 1 cup ammonia with 1 cup warm water and apply the ammonia mixture to the burn mark. Step 3. Let the ammonia solution soak into the burn mark for five minutes. Step 4. Scrub the ammonia mixture into the mark with a soft brush and repeat until the burn mark is removed. Step 5. Try a paste made out of baking soda and water if the burn marks are still visible. Apply the paste to the burn mark, let sit for three hours and then wipe away with a clean, damp cloth. Repeat as needed.

Is MDF considered to be a non-combustible material?

MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard is definitely combustible. I recommend going to this section of our site and selecting either stone or cast stone from the filters along the left-hand side of the page to view only noncombustible options.

Can this unit be attached to a brick mantle fireplace? picture attached

While mantel shelves may be affixed to a masonry hearth with proper anchoring, it appears as though you are looking to use the mantel surround in question to overlap the perimeter of your masonry hearth and this would not be possible. While the mantel surrounds we offer will commonly have a 1 1/2" projection or gap between the back of the mantel legs to accommodate a noncombustible tile surround, they are meant to be installed when the fireplace face is flush with the surrounding wall. If this were the case, the mantel surround's top shelf and side legs would cover any tile or stone facing commonly used in this type of application. For what you are trying to accomplish, the brick projects too far from the wall for the 1 1/2" projecting to allow the mantel legs and shelf to be flush with the wall. For these reasons, I'd recommend having a local carpenter fabricate a mantel surround.

The back of the mantel shelf and legs will be flush with the wall, but the mantel legs will have a 1 1/2" projection, allowing you to add the tile or stone surround of your choosing.

Beautiful Mantel
I only had a fireplace in my home, boring. Adding this mantel, added a touch of elegance. I had no issues with how the mantel was packaged. I would highly recommend it,
There was no damage to the mantel when I received. No, dents on the box and packaged to really protect the mantel.
I don't have any cons.

Tips for Getting the Best Results
This product was not quite as wide as we had thought it would be. We are guessing that the measurement provided online was of the top of the shelf. We had to purchase more trim to get it looking nice. I would suggest using some liquid nail to secure everything, because we experienced some gaps.
