Few things in life are less fun than dealing with an unwanted animal visitor in your home. Unless it's paying for water damage in your chimney, or having a wayward spark from your fireplace catching your roof on fire. Here's the thing, though - chimney caps help prevent all of those problems. Just a simple metal cage, sitting on top of your flue, that keep the rain and animals out, while the wire mesh lets smoke out and keep sparks in.But if you've got a chimney with multiple flues, it should be a bit more complicated, shouldn't it? Not here. This Gelco semi-custom, multi-flue chimney cap is built to take care of exactly your needs. And we mean your needs - semi-custom means that you get to choose the length, height, mesh size and and overhang for yourself. This item comes in widths of 9 inches to 28 inches, and lengths of 9 inches to 58 inches, with a 10 inch mesh height. We also offer this same custom chimney cap with mesh in 8 inch, 12 inch, and 16 inch height to fit almost everyone's needs.
    Customer Questions & Answers
By Vinny from East Lyme, CT on December 31, 2014
How do I measure the chimney to make sure that I get the right fit?
By eFireplaceStore on December 31, 2014

    Answer:
You will need to measure the width and length of the chimney at each corner, as the chimney can be slightly out of square from side to side. You will also need to measure the height of the chimney flue above the surrounding wash.

By Dwight from Santa Barbara, CA on December 1, 2015
I need a chimney cap for an oval chimney tile in the state of California. The outside diameter of the oval is 17-1/2 inches on the long side and 9-1/4 inches on the skinny part of the oval. Is this Multi-Flue semi-custom Gelco chimney cap the right product for me?

By Gordon from Manchester, TN on February 28, 2016
I don't see any flange on the bottom of this cap to fasten it to the bricks---so how does it fasten?
    By Will M. on March 1, 2016

    Answer:
This cap mounts to the surface of the chimney crown in between the outer diameter of the crown and the outer diameter of the terracotta flue that protrudes from your chimney and the lid can indeed be removed to install the cap with the reversible swing tabs at the base of the mesh positioned inwards.

The cap should be set in position for test fitment first. You should then mark several mounting points on the concrete wash through the perforations. Your mounting points should be evenly spaced and I recommend two anchor points on the long side of the cap and one on the ends. The cap should then be set aside and a hammer drill with a masonry bit should be used to drill into the wash. You can then installed plastic anchors and set the cap back in position over them. You will then need to run anchor screws through the strips and into the anchors you installed.

By Gordon from Manchester, TN on February 28, 2016
    The outside dimensions of my flue are L=39 5/8 inches X 22 inches-----the inside dimensions are 32 3/4 inches X 14 5/8 inches---what size cap should I order?
    By Will M. on March 1, 2016

    Answer:
While a 40" x 23" cap would suffice, choosing a cap dimension with mesh measurements that are closer to the outside dimension of the crown will provide more coverage and protection.

By Beth from San Jose, CA on September 26, 2014
The flue opening on my fireplace is 13 1/2" by 26" and the flue cap would need to be internally mounted because there is no upper flue tile. Do you guys do this?
By eFireplaceStore on September 26, 2014

    Answer:
We do indeed offer custom fabrication services for chimney caps. We can make them in galvanized steel, stainless steel, and copper.

By Garry from Frederick, MD on October 31, 2015
How does this Multi-flue semi-custom Gelco chimney cap mount to the chimney? Does the top come off so it can be attached to the chimney from the inside flange?
    By Will M. on November 2, 2015

    Answer:
This cap mounts to the surface of the chimney crown in between the outer diameter of the crown and the outer diameter of the terracotta flue that protrudes from your chimney and the lid can indeed be removed to install the cap with the swing tabs positioned inwards.

    Answer:
The top has 4 bolts. One in each corner that can be removed. The flaps are piano hinged and can be folded inside or outside.
By Brian from Los Angeles, CA on November 2, 2015

    Answer:
Yes, it is shipped without the top attached. You attach it to the chimney using holes in the flange inside and then attach the top using the 4 bolts you can see in the picture.
By Dan from MA on November 2, 2015

    Answer:
I had the same question, the photo isn't very clear. The mesh portion and bottom flange are one part, and the top cover attaches to that part via 4 fasteners through the cover in each corner so yes, the top is a separate piece. Also, the flange on the bottom that attaches to the chimney is actually 4 separate flanges that swing in or out so the screws can attach on the inside or outside of the mesh box, if you have the flanges swung to the outside you can access the mounting holes from the outside without having to remove the cover, but you may want to anyway to have better clearance for your tools to drive the screws.
By Justin from NJ on November 2, 2015

    Answer:
Flange is hinged so you can flip to outside and mount that way or flip inside and mount prior to attaching top.
By Seth from NJ on November 2, 2015

    Answer:
The flanges to mount the cap are hinged, so you can have the hinges on the outside of the sides or on the inside. I chose inside because this was an outdoor fireplace and was visible from the top. Yes, the top comes off easily, only four bolts, to hold it to the sides.

By James from Graham, WA on November 16, 2014
Will this chimney cap have pan head stainless screws inserted around the bottom of the cap to attach it to the vertical side of my chimney?

    By Tyler M. on November 17, 2014

    Answer:
These semi-custom multi-flue chimney caps do not attach directly to the flue/chimney itself, but rather these are mounted on the chimney crown around the flue(s).

There are a couple of ways to install this type of cap. The first is to test fit the cap to determine proper placement, then using construction adhesive, apply a bead to the metal swing tabs that run around the perimeter of the cap. Then, firmly secure the cap to the chimney wash.

The second way is better for removal. Test fit the cap on the chimney wash and once the correct location is determined, use a marker to mark mounting points around the perimeter of the swing tabs. You should have 2 mounting points on each long side and 1 on each short side. Set the cap aside and use a masonry drill bit to drill at your marked attachment points. Insert concrete anchors appropriate to the size of the holes you drilled. Lastly, place the cap in position and install fasteners through the tabs into the anchors.

Are Gelco caps rust resistant? Are copper caps rust resistant as well?

    By Chris C. on November 6, 2014

    Answer:
The Gelco semi custom chimney caps are constructed from a 304 stainless steel allowing it to stand up against rust and corrosion. These caps also carry a lifetime warranty on the workmanship and materials. Copper caps are also a rust free alternative, but they are completely custom ordered.

By Watt from Montreal, CAN on June 13, 2015
What are the specific mounting details for this Multi-Flue semi-custom Gelco chimney cap? Does this unit mount to the flue stub or to the chimney cap? If this mounts to the chimney cap, how is it removed for chimney cleaning?
By eFireplaceStore on June 14, 2015

    Answer:
This cap is designed to be mounted to the concrete wash at the top of the chimney, rather than the flue tile itself. You must drill into the concrete and install screws through the metal swingtabs that are attached to the perimeter of the cap. For cleaning, the lid can be quickly removed by unbolting the cap screws that hold it in place.

By Merritt from Stamford, CT on May 27, 2015
If the tile flue size is 20" x 24" will this Multi-Flue Gelco chimney cap fit over the flue? The flue projects 3" above the concrete cap. How high should the metal cap by? Do I secure the Gelco cap to the flue of the create with angle screws to the tile?
    By Brennan W. on May 27, 2015

    Answer:
Yes, this cap does have the capability of working for your chimney, though this will largely depend on the length and width you choose. Based on your clay flue height, you will need a minimum of an 8" tall cap. You will fasten the cap to the concrete lip of your chimney.

By Jeff from WA on October 12, 2014
The image shown for this product has the flanges (to secure to chimney) on the inside of the cap, whereas most other products I've seen have the flanges on the outside. Is this accurate? Also, how long are these tabs?
    By Will M. on October 13, 2014

    Answer:
The 3/4" swing tabs are reversible to allow for inside or outside mounting.

By Jeff from GA on April 16, 2015
What steel gauge is this Multi-Flue Gelco chimney cap made of?
    By Brennan W. on April 16, 2015

    Answer:
The lid of the cap is 24 gauge, and the mesh is 18 gauge.

By Charles from Madison, MS on January 4, 2015
My chimney flue is 8 3/4" wide and 24 3/8" long. The outside measurements of the chimney is 24" wide x 40" long. Will this cap come with a metal base that covers the entire outside?
By eFireplaceStore on January 5, 2015

    Answer:
This cap is made with a perimeter flange that can either be adhered to the chimney crown or secured via anchors and screws. However, it does not have a flange that covers the entire chimney. For maximum lid coverage, a cap can be ordered with dimensions that just cover the width and depth of the entire chimney structure.

By Colm from Boston, MA on November 12, 2015
My chimney dimensions are 30" x 16". What size of this Multi-Flue semi-custom Gelco chimney cap would I need?
    By Chris C. on November 12, 2015

    Answer:
If you wish to cover most of the chimney crown with the cap, I would suggest the cap be 28" long x 14" wide. This will allow the screen to be inset from the outermost edge of the chimney crown, but still provide adequate protection to the entire chimney crown with the standard 2.5" overhang.

Ordered 17x44x12 Gelco stainless steel cap. Product is exactly what I needed. Problem is it was delivered with the box end open. Bolts missing and some dents. I replaced the bolts at homedepot and banged out a couple dents in the cover. Point is whoever is shipping these needs to actually put packing material in the box or repackage for shipping. There was none and everything was just sliding around.
    Pros:
    Awesome cap
    Cons:
    Box not prepared for shipping.

Gelco Stainless 17"x17" base single flue chimney cap I've got a very old, oddball-sized chimney (since I rebuilt it myself - I'm a mechanic, NOT a mason!) with no clay liner ... or any liner for that matter. Needed a cap to fit this thing. Hours of searching on the net brought me here. I had originally passed over this cap, since the specs said 17"x17" - my chimney is a hair over 18" in both directions - didn't think it would fit. After asking eFireplace tech support for an option, I was directed to this - I had no idea it would fit a wide range of sizes, due to the long set-screws used to fasten it to the exterior of the chimney. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Price was reasonable as well - a WIN-WIN! We burn anthracite coal to heat our home. Stainless caps are a MUST, as flyash from coal turns to sulfuric acid when combined with moisture. The cap has been up for about a month now. Does have some slight staining that I can see, but that's to be expected. It's very secure, so I won't have to worry about climbing up on the roof in the middle of a storm to place the cap back on after a gust of wind. This was a common routine with the old cap, which I had to cut and modify to fit INSIDE the chimney. VERY happy with this one. Those set screws have a point to them, which bites right into the brick real good. Also allows for easy removal for cleaning. It's well built, and should last indefinitely.
    Pros:
Reasonably priced Well built Stainless construction
    Cons:
    None so far

Our flue is a ceramic/tile construction, and I wasn't quite certain how tight the screws should be. I didn't want them so loose that the cap blows off or so tight that the tile cracks. A little guidance on this topic would have been nice, but so far it seems to be secure even in high winds.

Despite much searching, I could not find any local supplier of stainless steel chimney caps in the Calgary, Alberta area of Canada. I found one retailer that charged a similar price for constructing caps from galvanized iron, but this cap is so much more durable. Even the included screws are stainless steel, and installation is a simple process. I am very happy with my purchase of this product.

This product is so outstanding that I am afraid it will outlast my house before it finally wears out. You all have done an incredible job in the design of your chimney caps, and really all I feel like I can say is for you to keep up the outstanding work. The ordering process on the website was extremely easy, and all of the sales representatives that I had the opportunity to speak with were very helpful and wonderful people. When the cap arrived, I was immediately amazed at the quality of workmanship to be found in this item. It really is an excellent product.

Since I have two flues, I purchased two of these chimney caps. They took only a couple of minutes to install, and fit nicely side by side. They are quite sturdy and well constructed. I definitely recommend them.
