I would like to put this fireplace in my sunroom. We would like to build a custom (rustic) mantel and surround so that it does not have to be recessed at all - it would be completely free standing. Is this possible?

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on February 21, 2013

    Answer:
That is certainly possible with this unit. Because it is able to be enclosed in a framed housing, you could construct a mantel to the dimensions required and trim the unit out with material of your choosing.

Can this Empire Vail fireplace be installed as a corner unit?
    By Will M. on March 29, 2016

    Answer:
Most all fireplaces may be installed in this fashion, so long as the corner framing dimensions are followed. For this model, these instructions are found on page 6 of the installation manual.

Is there a framing guide available for installing this unit? What type of construction materials are best to use for installing this fireplace?

By eFireplaceStore on February 2, 2015

    Answer:
There is indeed a downloadable product manual on the item page that will contain the framing dimensions needed for this model. The link is just below the product features and is listed in blue, titled "Download Product Manual". Page 6 of the manual will cover the framing dimensions for this unit. Standard 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 lumber can be used to frame this model.

This unit is completely ready to install, correct? What do you mean by enhancing with a "liner"? Is that something that needs to be purchased separately? Also, does this unit come with a remote? It says "remote ready." Does that mean a remote is available but must be purchased separately?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on February 25, 2013

    Answer:
Yes, purchased as-is, this unit is complete with everything required for operation (firebox, burner, log set.) The decorative brick liners can be found in the "Accessories" tab above; these serve to enhance to the look of the unit.

There is no remote control included with this fireplace, but you can see the choices for one in the "Accessories" tab as well. Please be sure to select the appropriate fuel type (natural gas or propane) for any vent-free fireplace, as they cannot be field-converted.

By Janice from Stockbridge, GA on February 23, 2013
Okay, just read further and it says the liner is not included. How much is it and is it easy to install?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on February 25, 2013

    Answer:
This Vail model can use the banded brick liner shown in the "Accessories" tab above. It is indeed a simple installation, with the panels fitting right in to the sides and rear of the firebox, held in place by retaining clips.

I have a Vail 26 inch 10,000 BTU VF fireplace. I had it in a bedroom and want to move it to my living room, Can the valve be replaced in this fireplace to make it a higher BTU fireplace, and if so would you have a part number that I need?
By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on December 12, 2011

    Answer:
Unfortunately, we do not offer the components necessary to accomplish a retrofit of this nature. In fact, many manufacturers recommend against such a renovation.

I'm planning to replace my old fireplace which is direct vent fireplace. Can I replace it with a vent-free fireplace ?

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on December 30, 2011

    Answer:
Normally, there is not a reason why a vent free fireplace could not be used in place of a direct vent model.

However, California has strict regulations on use of vent free appliances and it may not be viable for you to use one in your jurisdiction.

I would highly recommend checking with local code enforcement before making the switch.

I have a wood fire place and want to install a gas fireplace. I noticed some gas fire places hiss - how to do I avoid getting a unit that hisses?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on March 29, 2013

    Answer:
Usually, a hissing sound generated by a gas fireplace is a symptom of how it was installed. Ensuring that gas pressure to the unit is correct, gas line size is correct, and that the supply line is straight will all have an effect on the unit. In many cases, the supply line is bent or the valve is being over-pressurized, causing the hissing. The units we carry are high quality models that are designed to only emit the sound of flame movement when properly installed.

By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on December 15, 2011

Unfortunately, we do not currently offer a 26" direct vent unit. However, we do offer a 27" unit. Please find it below.
