By Earl Kossuth from North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on April 7, 2012
Is sitting this unit onto a Trex deck safe and appropriate? The unit would set approximately 14' from the back of our vynal sided home. Is this a safe distance? are there any other concerns I need to consider?
By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on April 9, 2012

    Answer:
Per the manufacturer, these fireplaces can indeed be installed on an elevated deck of natural or synthetic materials. You will simply want to make sure you have the proper support for 1200 pounds. Over a 2 foot by 4-foot area, that would equal about 150 pounds per square foot. 2 x 10 joices every 12 inches is recommended. The fireplace should also be set near a main support. 14' from your home is adequate as the general rule is 10' between this fireplace and any structure. However, it is recommended that you check with your local code office to ensure that no other provision must be made.

    Answer:
The base height of this unit from the bottom to the "hearth" shelf is 13", and the brick layer itself measures 2 1/2" tall, so the total distance from the bottom to the platform on which the firebox chamber rests is 15 1/2".

If I order this today, does it have to ship right away or are we able to plan it for it to arrive when we are ready for it in the project?

Also, are there different sizes of this model? This one looks like it has a large opening, but in one of the questions posted on the website it says the opening is 24".

This unit is currently only available in a single size, with an opening approximately 25 inches wide, although the entire assembly is much wider.

Are the holes drilled in for natural gas connection even if you do no order the NG kit. If the wood does not work out I was thinking of switching to natural gas in the future.
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on March 14, 2012

    Answer:
The holes are only pre-drilled if you order the gas log kit. However, we can ask the manufacturer to pre-drill for the gas logs for you at no additional charge, if you so desire. Keep in mind, though, that the holes drilled for this purpose may only work with Mirage Stone's gas log kit. If you want to buy gas logs locally after the purchase, your unit may need further modification to make another gas log set work. If you would rather get gas logs locally, the manufacturer recommends not having any holes pre-drilled and waiting to have a plumber do so for you in accordance with the gas log set you buy later.

Can stone be applied to the outside to give it a custom look that my wife would like?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on May 22, 2012

    Answer:
Certainly. The cast stone that this product is manufactured from is very conducive to being covered with noncombustible material of your choosing.

Please keep in mind however, that you will need to utilize a construction adhesive and mortar that is rated for outdoor applications. Some silicate based mortars deteriorate rapidly outdoors.

By Mark from MA on March 30, 2016

If this outdoor fireplace is installed at the edge of a covered patio but still covered, what is the minimum clearance to the ceiling? For cost reasons, I would prefer not to have a chimney run all the way up through the roof.
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on August 23, 2013

    Answer:
Per the manufacturer, at least 1 foot of clearance must be maintained from the top of the chimney to any combustible materials. The spark arrestor must be in position.

By Mike from Georgetown Ontario Canada on April 9, 2014
What is the BTU output of this? Do you have more pics of both sides?
    By Justin R. on April 9, 2014

    Answer:
This item is a see-thru outdoor unit, and appears the same from the front and back. As it is capable of burning gas, wood, and coal, there is no listed BTU rating for this unit. Your BTUs would be determined by the kind of fuel you use.

By Kate from East Berlin, PA on April 28, 2014
I'm very close to ordering this fireplace, but I'm just wondering why in the image it looks as though it's solid in the back (which I would prefer), but in the 'ask and answer' section it is referred to as a 'see thru unit'. Can you tell me if it is solid (like the image) or open in the back?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on April 28, 2014

    Answer:
We apologize for the confusion. This unit is indeed a standard, one-sided fireplace. The Outdoor See Through Fireplace - Tan With Copper Trim has its own, separate item page.
By Angela from Azusa, California on July 16, 2014

    Answer:
We made it solid in the back. I think it is an option to have it open on both sides. We added stone veneers to the entire fireplace. It would not look nice by itself without a veneer covering. See our finished product.

By Scott from Goodyear, AZ on March 25, 2017

Is it legal to import to Canada for a normal resident?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on June 1, 2012

    Answer:
If the gas log option is selected for this unit, it will indeed come with all the needed components to make your connections.

We do deliver, free of charge to North Dakota. Generally, there is not an issue with importation of vented gas appliances into Canada. However, it would be prudent to look into this with local jurisdiction, prior to ordering the product.

What are the dimensions of the base that rests on the floor for this unit?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 12, 2013

    Answer:
The base for this unit measures 45 inches wide by 22.5 inches deep and 12 inches tall.

By Beth from FL on June 4, 2013
Do the outer dimensions listed with this fireplace include the surrounding ledge shown at the upper portion of the base, just below the opening. What are the exact total exterior dimensions?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on June 4, 2013

    Answer:
Yes, the dimensions listed on this item page include the hearth platform. Per the manufacturer, this platform measures 51 1/2" wide and 31 1/2" deep. It is about 2 1/2" thick. Please allow for variations of approximately 1/4" due to the manufacturing process.

This Mirage Stone outdoor wood burning fireplace is next to my patio. Should I put a footer in to make sure that the unit does not move during the freezing and thawing of the ground? If so, how much of a footer would you suggest?
    By Will M. on June 3, 2015

    Answer:
Please keep in mind that this weighs 1200 pounds and you will need a foundation to support and distribute this weight evenly. Over a 2 foot by 4-foot area, that would equal about 150 pounds per square foot. The manufacturer recommends 2 x 10 joices every 12 inches.

Can this be ordered with propane logs?

Do you sell individual pieces? I have a Mirage Stone open-face, outdoor, wood burning fireplace. The three foot long piece that goes directly above the opening is damaged.
    By Brennan W. on January 17, 2017

    Answer:
We will be happy to check on special order pricing from the manufacturer. What is the model of your Mirage Stone fireplace?

By Debbie from Belgrade, MT on March 7, 2016
Are you able to add brick or stone to the outside?

    By Will M. on March 8, 2016

    Answer:
You can most certainly adhere brick or stone to the surface of any of the Mirage Stone fireplaces.

By Larry from NY on August 11, 2013
Does the wood fireplace a cast iron log grate to hold the wood in the fire box?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on August 12, 2013

    Answer:
Per the manufacturer, a log grate is not included with the unit. An appropriately sized log grate would need to be purchased, should you desire to utilize one.

By Gary from Cypress, Texas on July 22, 2014
Is it recommended to mount the bottom of the unit? Any concern about standing up to wind conditions?
    By Chris C. on July 22, 2014

    Answer:
Due to the total weight of this unit being close to 1,200 pounds I do not believe that it would be necessary to secure the unit to the surface in which it is to be installed.
By Jim from Eastern Long Island on July 23, 2014

    Answer:
I am currently using my second mirage fireplace that I recently purchased and set up. My first was at my prior home 7 years ago, both my prior and current are located on open bayfront with high winds and have never had a problem.

By Ted from Parkville, MD on August 7, 2014
As this sits, would you say it would be safe to put on a wooden deck?
By eFireplaceStore on August 8, 2014

    Answer:
This unit can indeed be placed upon a wooden, uncovered deck. Additional bracing will need to be added to support the weight. The manufacturer recommends 2 x 10 main joists spaced at 12 inches on center. In addition, 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 piers should be placed below the deck structure.

By Nick from Memphis, TN on March 8, 2016
I like the Mirage Stone outdoor wood burning fireplace but was wondering if I could make an alteration to it. I would like to be able to hang something over the fireplace so I would like the widest part of the fireplace to be much taller. Could I put a shelf across the back of the upper blocks so that I can put a few courses of cinder block and then purchase an extra set of upper blocks to put on top of them? I would then continue up from there with the back, front and side panels.
    By Will M. on March 8, 2016

    Answer:
An alteration as you have described would not be recommended as this would result in the fireplace being used outside of the manufacturer's safety testing parameters, so any warranty would be voided out. This alteration would have to be done on site and the manufacturer does not provide individual assembly pieces.

By Cory from State College, PA on March 8, 2016
Is there a chimney extension that can be purchased that fits this product? I read the reviews and most responses were that it needs a taller chimney.
    By Will M. on March 8, 2016

    Answer:
The chimney can be made taller by extending with Class A chimney sections and an anchor plate if need be. The manufacturer does not offer stone chimney extensions.

By Cory from State College, PA on March 8, 2016
Does this fireplace have multiple openings for heat or just the one in the front?
    By Will M. on March 8, 2016

    Answer:
This is a single-sided fireplace and offers only one opening on the front.

We purchased the mirage fireplace and unfortunately it was damaged heavily in transit. The customer service was excellent on getting the replacement pieces that we needed. I haven't even put it together yet, so I really can't review the product yet but I do know i would buy again from efireplacestore.com just because of the service received.

A very fast way to get an attractive and safe fireplace on the patio
    Pros:
Speed of delivery and set up--Safety--draws well when warmed up--Appears durable
    Cons:
We added 4 inches to the base; it would be better if it was a bit taller. Smoke escaping seams does discolor the outside

Waited to submit this review until the fireplace was assembled, but so far, so good. It was ordered on Friday, August 12, it shipped the next business day, Monday, August 15 and it arrived exactly one week later, Monday August 22. It actually arrived too fast, as my husband arranged vacation time for the following week. Despite numerous stickers and handwritten messages on the box to inspect contents immediately, the impatient truck driver refused to wait for this 60 yr old female to remove enough of the contents to be assured that all were in good condition. Finally wrote a note on the BoL that the driver refused to wait and signed to get rid of him as he was impeding the process. I might have hired some help, but I wasn't willing to pay someone from 9am to 5pm for about an hour's worth of work. The fireplace finally went together September 7, as part of a backyard retaining wall project. Two contractors assembled it in about an hour and a half and were very impressed with the notched, tongue and groove design. We obviously haven't used it yet, but it appears to be very sturdy and durable and we want to ensure that it lasts a long time. About that...the product comes from AZ, where it might snow, rain, and freeze at times. However, the product is pre-cast concrete, albeit, with a smooth, fine finish resembling stone. Here in the NE, even stone can be shattered by snowy, wet drippy freeze-thaw cycles that occur routinely through fall, winter and early spring. In order to preserve the integrity of the product we will be hiring a mason to veneer the surface. Both the contractor and the block vendor agree. I'd really like to hear from the other reviewers from places in the NE to see how their fireplaces have fared through winter in this climate.
    Pros:
fast delivery assembles easily great sale price color choices
    Cons:
    none yet

This fireplace was everything we expected, and a really good value. It arrived very fast, and my wife and I assembled it in about 1 hour. I did pour a concrete base a week in advance and oversized the pad so I could adjust the final facing of the fireplace without overhanging the pad below. We did find 1 or 2 pieces mismarked which made for some husband/wife communication squabble, but end up fine.
    Pros:
Quick delivery Fast assembly Able to cover with stone later on
    Cons:
Comes with a grill grate that I really can't imagine using...grease at the base from grilling, etc., and it ultimately is fairly low to the ground. Really would be nice if an option existed--EVEN for RETROFIT, of a couple of pieces of additional chimney chase to get the smoke a little higher up and away from folks....

    Cons:
    some pieces chipped during assembly

The parts were packaged well and clearly marked. My 8 year old grandson and I put it together in about an hour. I did not see the "rope" in the video instructions, so I had to take some of the pieces apart to place the rope where it belonged once I realized what it was for. (I didn't look through the whole instruction pages before putting the fireplace together--but that's how guys are.) We have had fires on some cool nights and really enjoyed the ambiance.
    Pros:
Fire burns well inside the protected space. Wind is not a big factor as far as affecting the burn. It's nice to know I can take it apart and move it should the need arise. It is remarkably sturdy and easy to put together.
    Cons:
A few of the pieces had some marks on them or chipped easily, but nothing major. I wish the instructional video had detailed what to do with the rope.

All pieces were clearly marked and the directions were clear for assembly. It is important to talk to the shipping company prior to delivery in case your location is restricted. The size is perfect for the location that I chose. On top of a wooden deck. I chose the mirage design because the fire chamber is raised up off the wood decking. It went together easily. I am 79 years old and was able to handle all details.

Just purchased a Sandstone unit as above... Shipping was free, Nice bonus there. Truck dropped it off in the end of our driveway... one full pallet at about 1300 lbs... shipping company driver was excellent because he waited till we inspected the product without complaint. We pull off the cover/cardboard and inspected while taking pics as needed. Packing though good could be a little better. Several pieces had shifted in packing and resulted in a couple of chipped corners. More strapping and foam sheets would have prevented same. So then it's the moving of all pieces from front to rear yard taking 30 mins... yes a lot of parts, some heavy. Putting together took 50 mins by myself and wife with assist now and then ( had a level location pre-done )... It would be better to have some help doing this so keep in mind. Directions were good as I had watch the video twice before starting and the parts at all marked well so no complaint there. But I think the directions have to be change a bit OR at least READ all before assembly as went I got to the LAST page there were notes about installing the anti-smoke packing ribbon. ( and no, I wasn't taking it apart then... but they do show some install after assembly too tho not as good) Overall, even with the minor problems; some slightly chipped pieces ( some I were able to swap around to back ( not all pieces interchangeable)), and instructions with the last page that should be in front, it was good. Color is great , the Sandstone is like a cedar color and that works great for me. Total time from truck at door to finished fireplace was under 2 hours.... then I started a fire and had a glass of wine !
    Pros:
    Good color, good value
    Cons:
couple of parts chipped due to lack of padding/strapping
