The extra durable graphite-impregnated rope is braided to prevent unwinding and resist abrasion from daily use. It's designed to withstand temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The black color even allows it to blend with your stove, no matter what color your stove may be. This kit includes a tube of easy-to-use gasket cement and a rope which measures 7' long and 5/16" in diameter.

Since this is a rope gasket, it refers to the diameter.
