Good Stove

Here’s a couple of tips if you decide to buy this stove: You may need to keep the door open just a little bit to give the flame enough air. The door vents are too small to keep the flame going like I like. Also, be sure you caulk the stovepipe thoroughly to keep smoke from seeping into your house. I bought it to heat the house, and it does that—good product!

Works Well with a Few Modifications

This is a very good kit. I had a lot of trouble finding a good barrel, because they are apparently hard to come by in my area. If the barrel you use is painted, you will need to burn it outside first to eliminate the smell and smoke. I attached four feet of black pipe and mounted the door as instructed. That enabled me to use the bigger bung plug cap as an extra air vent under the door. I also made a metal rack that fits in the bottom of the barrel to allow air under the wood. It works very well.

Inexpensive Heat, Needs Some Adjusting

This is a relatively inexpensive kit, and it does a great job of heating my garage, which is under 1000 feet square. Not hard to assemble, but I did have to make some adjustments. (1) The flue didn’t fit right—the stove pipe hits the damper. I fixed this by buying an extension piece about six inches long and installing it on the outside of the stove. (2) I also added a longer bolt to the door handle because in my opinion the one that comes with the kit won’t stay tight. I was concerned it would eventually fall out and a fire could result. Works great now that I’ve improved it. Here’s a tip, too, for when you’re making the stove: Keep the barrel’s bung hole on the bottom. If you use some creativity you can add a little door there, allowing it to function as an extra air vent, which really helps start the fire. So, like I say, after those adjustments, I’m really happy with the stove and would recommend it to others.
