If this is built into the wall and there is a power outage, is there a danger of it overheating and causing a fire?
No. In fact, this fireplace does not require or use any electricity, as it utilizes a millivolt valve with a standing pilot ignition. Electricity would only be needed if you added the optional blower, which is not required for operation.

If we buy a remote does this then become the only way to turn on the fireplace? What if the electricity goes out?
No, there is always the ability to turn this fireplace on and off manually. In fact, this fireplace does not use any electricity as it operates off a standing pilot light. Electricity is only needed if you are adding the optional blower.
