Finished mantels are nice to admire, but there are some situations where it would be much easier to install the proper mantelpiece into your home and then finish it according to the needs of your living room. Empire has decided to leave their 52 Inch Profile Wooden Mantel with Standard Trim unfinished, so that you can decide based upon the environment of your living room what you would like to make your hearth look like.

Can I use this mantel for a wood burning fireplace?
    By Chris C. on August 4, 2016

    Answer:
This mantel can indeed be used with a wood burning fireplace. If the fireplace is a factory built prefabricated fireplace, please refer to the installation manual for the fireplace to ensure that clearance requirements are maintained to the mantel itself.

We have a granite surround that is 1 1/8" thick. Will the return on this model work for us? Also, we want to stain with a honey maple stain. What type of wood is this made from?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on November 22, 2011

    Answer:
The following information is from Empire:

The return depth on this mantel is only going to be about 3/4". It is made with 1/2-inch cabinet-grade plywood construction with real hardwood moldings.

Does this Empire 52 inch Profile wooden mantel with standard trim come pre-assembled?
    By Will M. on September 29, 2015

    Answer:
This mantel will not arrive pre-assembled. The installation instructions may be found here.
By Krissy from Littleton, CO on September 29, 2015

    Answer:
We have not yet installed this mantel due to our other projects, but from what we see, it's great. It arrived in a long box and it is in 4 separate pieces. (The mantel top is in 2 pieces, the sides are the other 2) There are a few smaller pieces to use for filling in the sides. Seems fairly simple to assemble. Good luck!

How do I measure my fireplace so I know what size to look for?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on September 7, 2012

    Answer:
Generally, you will need to measure just the inside height and width of the fireplace opening. Then, you must decide how much of an apron you would like between the edges of the fireplace opening and the inside of the profile mantel. Standard practice calls for at least 4 inches of space that can be finished with tile, stone, etc.

I would recommend this item to a friend.
The piece holding the Mantel in place was too weak. Needed to install a 2x4 to the studs to give the Mantel a solid feel. Lots of gaps that required caulking. Needed two coats of primer and three coats of gloss paint to finish the job.
