How does this work? I was looking for the kerosene fire starter that is a container that holds kerosene with a soapstone (I think) ball and handle that sits in the container. You light the ball and put it under the wood and it starts the fire. The problem is that there's not a good place to put the ball until it cools and you can return it to the container. Is this similar?

    Answer:
This product is indeed very similar. The cast iron tray contains a refractory block that is porous, allowing it to absorb kerosene and act as a fire starter. Once the fire has burned in, the tray can be pulled to the side with a fire poker and refilled for the next use.

I only use diesel fuel in mine and usually get three or four seasons before it needs replacing. really works

Had one in 1972 - and used for 10 years - marvelous, easy to start a fire in the wood stove.

Daughter and son-in-law with new wood stove need one, so this will be a great gift. Nothing I've seen in 40 years is a better idea than this one for frequent fire startups.
    Pros:
Lasts forever, nothing wears out, just add some kerosene, and it always works the first time.
    Cons:
An initial investment in making wood fires easy to start, but well worth it.

Why mess with messy paper and kindling when you can use this great fire starter and a little diesel fuel instead? With three wood stoves, I go through at least six cords of wood in a season so I want it to be simple.
