Does this have to be vented vertically?
Yes, all B-vent fireplaces have to be vented vertically through the roof, as they are natural draft appliances. Direct vent fireplaces can be vented through an outside wall.

An open hearth means that it is an open front and draws burning air from inside of the home, there are compatible bi-fold doors available for this model.
