What is the inside diameter of the joist shield?

Per the manufacturer, the pass-through on the 8" joist shield is 10 3/8 inches in diameter.

How close to the joist can be with the joist shield?

This firestop is meant to be mounted into your joists. The shield itself creates the clearance needed to pass the pipe through your ceiling, which is 2".

Is this unit meant to exhaust furnace gases as part of the chimney, or does it just support the chimney pipe as it passes through the floor?

This MetalBest Ultra-Temp 6 Inch Diameter Chimney Pipe Firestop/Joist Shield is not a part of a chimney system for venting exhaust, but it does support the pipe as the pipe passes through the floor.
