Yes, but you may have some headaches. To explain, a 36,000 Btu LP log set will use approximately 1.7 lbs. of liquid propane per hour. With LP tanks filled to 80% capacity, the tank will, at best, hold 32 pounds of liquid propane. LP tanks only absorb heat through the "wetted surface area" or the portion of the tank bathed in liquid propane. As this level decreases, so does the tank's ability to provide pressure and this is also affected by colder climates. To explain, a 40 lb. tank used with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees will be capable of producing enough pressure for the log set until 10 pounds remain in the tank. At this level, you would start to experience outages because the tank would start to "freeze up" due to the vaporizing capacity of the tank not equaling the Btu input of the 36,000 Btu log set. At 0 degrees, you would start experiencing outages with 20 pounds left in the tank, so this could potentially be frustrating. We have had many customers (and LP suppliers) not understand that a half full tank may not provide enough pressure to support the input rating of the log set. This is why most log set manufacturers recommend a tank size between 50-100 pounds.
