What is the trim kit for? Is it required for the stove to operate?

The trim kit should be used if you are installing this unit inside an existing fireplace (as an insert). If you plan to use it as a freestanding stove, you must purchase the pedestal.

How hot does the outside get?

This vent-free appliance does get hot to the touch while in operation. I would recommend placing a free-standing screen in front of the appliance to provide an additional safety barrier.

Why isn't the base included?

We apologize for the confusion. Buck Stove sells many units without a base because they can be installed as fireplace inserts with the trim kits (installed inside an existing fireplace with a trim to cover the rest of the opening, without the need for a base kit).

Does this stove come with remote control and does the remote have a thermostat?

No, there is no remote included, nor is there an option to add one. The stove operates off a hydraulic thermostat valve configuration, which must be manually set to a temperature setting (usually labeled in numbers, not temperature reading).

Cheap, Beautiful with easy install
The stove heats the whole 3 stories, 2,600 sq ft home. Enclosed steel wool embers make a realistic wood-like fire. The unit is completely assembled, attach stand with 3 metal screws and hook up the gas line, and you're ready to go.
