Regarding a gas insert cover that's the wrong size for the opening, the actual opening is 36" wide and 31" tall to the steel lintel, 31 3/4" to the brick. The current screen leaves a gap of about 1" at the top, and extends beyond each side about 6". Can I replace it with a new black one that fits?

This trim attaches to the perimeter of select Empire gas fireplaces, but, for the vent-free series, it must be a louvered model.

While this will not, the correct frame for the unit is the Empire EZ-Attach Outer Fireplace Frame - For 36 Inch Breckenridge Deluxe Vent-Free Gas Fireboxes.

Will this Empire 3 piece outer frame for 36 inch louvered fireboxes and fireplaces serve as the necessary non-combustible surround (6 inches) needed?

This trim kit is designed to cover the small gap needed between a combustible wall and the metal edges of the fireplace, however it will only fit certain models. It is not designed as a surround to cover larger gaps.

Finishing Touch
The 3 piece outer frame really gives a finishing touch and makes the fireplace seem larger. It outlines the unit and makes it ready for stone or whatever finish you prefer. It is easy to install also. Thanks for a great product at such a good price.
