Is this screen essential since the glass actually separates the firebox from the conditioned space? What is its actual function?

This screen is not required for installation or operation of the Tahoe Deluxe 32" models, but it serves as a safety barrier (and it is required by code) because of how hot the glass gets when the unit is in operation for a while.
