    It says this trim kit is 33 inches. Is that the opening at 33 inches or does it actually trim out the 33-inch firebox 2 1/2 inches wider all the way around?

    The "33 inches" refers to the Dimplex BF33DXP electric fireplace.  This trim kit is only suitable for use with that fireplace.
