Let this Elite Adjustable 4 Inch Fireplace Hood with Lintel Mount ensure the safety and longevity of your mantel or hearth surround. Good quality fireplace hoods like this one protect mantels and surrounds by insulating them against the heat generated by fires. That added buffer becomes very important when you have a mantel made of a more sensitive material, such as wood.

An Elite Adjustable 4 Inch Fireplace Hood with Lintel Mount will safeguard your fireplace surround and keep it in optimal condition. That's a pretty large payoff for such a small investment.

Can the glass heat deflector be installed over a gas fireplace? Can it withstand the heat?
    1 Answer
Yes, a hood/heat deflector can be installed above a gas fireplace. You should not install a hood directly over louvers/vents, however.

Will this hood work on gas fireplace with glass front ? Have TV mointed above and need to block heat?
    1 Answer
Since there would be no lintel for the hood to attach, I'd recommend a surface mount hood like the Elite Adjustable 4 Inch Fireplace Hood with Surface Mount instead.

How do I get the self tapping screws into the lintel? Do I also have to drill the lintel or will the screws tap into the 1/4 inch steel lintel?
    1 Answer
You will need to pre-drill 1/8" pilot holes for the self-tapping screws as described in the installation manual.

    Dan
    from Tulsa, Oklahoma asked:
    November 20, 2016
I have a 60" TV and sound bar mounted directly above a non-vented gas fireplace, which generates significant heat upwards. The fire box is 44" with 48" width at the first indent and overall width of 58 1/4". I'm hoping a hood similar to this one might fit somewhere on or above the fire box. I'm also planning to add a black granite mantel piece to further deflect any heat from the AV equipment. Any thoughts or suggestions?
    1 Answer
Because heat output from a vent free fireplace is significant to the area directly above the opening, a surface mounted hood or mantel shelf to deflect the heat is recommended. Based on the overall dimensions of your fireplace, I would recommend a custom 60 inch hood to mount to the surface of the wall directly above the surround.

    from FL asked:
    January 6, 2016
What is this Elite adjustable 4 inch fireplace hood with lintel mount made out of? If the hood gets hot, will the heat still rise up to the mantel?
    1 Answer
Per the manufacturer, the brass and chrome hoods are plated steel and the black is a painted galvanized steel. The hoods can get hot while the fireplace is in operation, but they will help block the heat coming from the unit and keep your mantel from getting too hot.

    January 16, 2015
Would this product direct the heat outwards into the room and prevent damage to the mantel? Does it make any difference if it is a 4 inch or 6 inch for better prevention from heat damage to the mantel?
    1 Answer
This product is designed for precisely the issue you are experiencing. The projection of the hood will depend on the projection of your mantel and how far it is above the opening.

Do you attach the hood by screwing it right into the brick fireplace?
    1 Answer
This particular hood is a lintel mount unit. As such, it is mounted by attaching screws vertically through it to the lintel bar of your fireplace opening.

How deep is the plate that attaches to the lintel?
    1 Answer
The manufacturer advises: "The lintel depth on an adjustable hood is 1 inch. To get a longer lintel depth, please order a fixed width lintel hood (please search keyword FSD-ESH4) to the correct length and ask for a 2 inch depth for the lintel."

    Made my stove look finished
I got the matte black hood to install at the top of my new wood stove insert. My fireplace was 32" tall, and there was a gap from the top of the stove surround, to the bricks on fireplace. That gap was visually annoying. Once installed to the underside of the fireplace opening, the gap was no longer visible. It doesn't interfere with the output of heat in the room and makes the stove look finished. I have received compliments from guests. The black was a safe choice and blends right into the existing surround. Did require a high-speed drill bit to install the screws.

    Fireplace hood
Shipped really fast no complaints with company or order details. Wish the hood would have been just a heavier gauge steel. However, satisfied with purchase. Saves our mantel.
ProsStops heat from traveling up and sends it out Protects mantel
ConsNeeded to be heavier gauge steel

    Good product, but . . .
This is a well-made hood and the antique brass finish looks great. However, I had to mount on a 1/4" thick steel lintel. The screws should be hex-head so one can use a nut driver to install them; no way could I get enough torque on those Philips head screws!
