Customer Q&A with Product Specialists

Is it safe to use a ventless Empire propane heater in a fairly airtight basement of approximately 1200 sq ft?
Using a ventless Empire propane heater in a fairly airtight basement, even one that is 1200 square feet, generally poses safety concerns. Vent-free heaters require adequate ventilation to operate safely and prevent the buildup of exhaust gases and oxygen depletion. An airtight space may not provide the necessary fresh air for proper combustion and human respiration. For a 1200 square foot area, a ventless propane heater with approximately 48,000 BTUs would be appropriate for heating. For example, the Empire RH50CB Closed Front Gas Room Heater with Blower - Propane offers 50,000 BTUs and is designed for large areas. However, before considering any ventless unit, it is crucial to check with your local building authority or other authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) regarding regulations and restrictions on vent-free appliances in your specific area, as they are not permitted in all locations. They will have the final say on what is allowable and safe for your home. For airtight spaces like basements, a direct vent heater might be a safer alternative to consider, as they draw combustion air from outside and vent all exhaust gases directly outdoors, completely sealing the combustion process from your living space.

How many BTU's are needed to heat a 900 sq ft garage area?
For a vent-free gas heater, you would need a 30,000 BTU heater. For a vented gas heater (direct vent or gravity vent), we would recommend a 50,000 BTU unit.
