Is insulation layer necessary if this liner is being used inside an existing masonry fireplace?
    1 Answers
The insulation will most always be a required by the chimney liner manufacturer to maintain warranty. Also, it is recommended if the goal is to improve the performance of your hearth as the thin metal walls of corrugated stainless flexible liner will not insulate heated flue gases exiting the chimney, which may result in rapid creosote buildup, potentially damaging the chimney liner as creosote is highly corrosive. This is especially the case where the purpose of relining is due to the installation of a high efficiency wood insert with an existing terracotta flue that is much larger than the 6" liner the insert requires or with fireplaces with existing draft issues where relining is a corrective action.
