What is that hole in the plate?
    1 Answer
The purpose of the hole in the damper plate is for the rod of the rotary-style damper control to pass through.

What is the best method to cut a cast iron damper plate to fit?
    1 Answer
Using a diamond grit blade for your jig saw or reciprocating saw will be the best way to go for cutting the plate down.

How do you install this item?
    1 Answer
Typically, most damper plates install on the top side of the damper throat opening. You will need to turn the damper plate longways, to fit it through the opening, then rest it on the recess in the damper throat. You will then be able to install the mounting pins and attach the plate to the damper control.

    Replacement damper
Bought a house that the previous owners removed the damper for a wood burning insert. When I pulled that hideous thing out I discovered there was no damper to be found. House was built in 1985 and the replacement damper fit perfectly to the old frame. Very heavy duty.
Super heavy duty, fit great. None

    Just as described.
This was shipped quickly and packaged well. We bought our house 10 mos ago and there were 2 cookie sheets in place of a damper plate so we've had the fireplace closed off with a panel to try to keep heat loss to a minimum. We are older and retired on a restricted income so needed an inexpensive fix before winter. We measured and ordered the 42" plate and the ratchet. They came today and my 75 y/o husband placed it, we put the ratchet through the holder that was still there, added the cotter pin and were done in under 10 minutes. I'd have given it 5 stars except there were no directions. It was simple and we guessed correctly as to how it should go but took the time to review the vestal installation guide online to be sure. Finally,,,no air up the chimney!
Quick...inexpensive (didn't have to pay for a service call) and relatively easy for beginners to install. No directions included.

    Right Size!
For anyone browsing without going thru the effort to actually measure your existing damper READ THIS!!!! The size that is advertised is the size of the damper frame at bottom so with mine this 42" damper plate is actually almost 36" in length. This damper replaced my old rusted out one and works perfectly. Not same manufacture as original but still fit in this case. Only complaint that I can think of is it is not perfectly flat, it is actually bowed, but I think it is very difficult to cast a flat piece of iron 100% flat!!!
great fit, works as needed. Slight bow in overall length, i would be surprised if there are any straight ones? Old plate was also bowed
