These Superior/FMI 42 inch extruded aluminum bi-fold glass doors look like the doors I have but where can I look to find a serial number on the fireplace so I know that they will install correctly?
    1 Answers
Usually, the serial number and model information is located on a build plate which is affixed to the fireplace chassis just above the refractory brick lining on either the left or right hand side of the fireplace. I have also seen the build plate attached to the fireplace chassis hidden behind the mesh curtains.

Am I supposed to remove the black metal mesh screen that came with the fireplace when I install these doors?
    1 Answers
It is recommended to leave the screen in place. The doors should be left open when you first light a fire, in order to allow the glass panes to slowly warm and prevent them from shattering. During this time, the screens should be used to prevent embers and sparks from leaving the fireplace.

I have a 10-year old DESA M42E (B-vent) gas fireplace. Will this bi-fold glass door model fit? My manual indicates that a BD42 door is the appropriate part number, and I'm assuming that FMI has placed its name on the DESA product line. The fireplace opening is 42" x 24" (my measurement) and has holes drilled in the sides. Also, does this item come with a replacement door-stop bracket (which is mentioned on the BD42 installation instructions)?
    1 Answers
Yes, this is the bi-fold glass door kit for use with your M42E fireplace. Per the manufacturer, the door stop is not included in this BD42 door kit. That part can be purchased separately, however. Please reply with your shipping zip code and we can provide pricing and availability.

    1 Answers
Per the manufacturer, the doors are still available for this unit. It is important to note that the unit may not have a door rail kit installed if it is more than 15 years old or has never had doors before. FMI began adding the door rails on newer units. If the kit is present, you should be able to see mounting holes for the door pins near the edges of the opening. If you would like to order the doors, I can contact you via phone to do so.

These doors are bit too tall for the VB42. Instead, the FMI 42 Inch Extruded Aluminum Bi-Fold Doors - Black should be used. The design is exactly the same, but they are able to fit the shorter opening of your fireplace.

    1 Answers
Unfortunately, these doors are manufactured for use with only FMI fireplaces. We cannot recommend their use with your fireplace. Unless, of course, it was manufactured by FMI. This contingency is true for the majority of our pre-fab fireplace door kits - the manufacturer of the door kit must also manufacture the fireplace.

They're OK with a little tweaking
The doors arrived on time and were very easy to install. However, after I initially installed them they were significantly out of alignment. Another annoying problem is that the glass panels were not all installed in the same orientation. You can tell this because the small labeling on the individual panes were different. Whereas the label on one would be upper right, some would be lower left etc. To fix this, I had to completely disassemble the panels, re-orient the panels and reassemble. With some finessing I was able to get the doors aligned and the panels oriented in a symmetric fashion. If you are not as persnickity as me, you can just hang them as-is. Also, the handles are of poor quality and one of mine broke immediately. But, for the price and ease of installation not too bad

    Poorly assembled
While the doors have an excellent appearance to them for the price point, the product as received required a lot of work before install. The glass of each pane was not correctly centered, which required adjustment so that the doors would not have gaps between them, also they required tilting (side to side / top to bottom) to get the upper and lower gaps parallel. ( only so much adjustment you can get out of the fireplace frame adjusters. After getting all that corrected, and this may be nit picking, but the glass on 2 of the doors were upside down and inside out in comparison to the other doors (noticed the etched / stamped mfg name on the corners of the glass panes), So it all had to come apart again, and start all over. Once all that was corrected, the function and appearance was what I would expect for doors of that price point.
    ProsGood appearance and function.
ConsNot well assembled, requires a large amount of rework, and you need to be mechanically minded, to be able to get them right.

    Fits Perfect, Very Attractive
Easy to install and fits perfectly. Provides a totally unobstructed view of the fire while serving as an additional safety barrier. Should have bought this a year ago when the fireplace was first installed. The peace of mind it offers alone, is worth the price.
Pros* Easy to Install * Easy to clean * Opens and closes easily. * Provides added barrier of protection from heat to side mantels. * Keeps cats from using the fireplace as a litter box when the fire and coals have died out! Cats love the fireplace more than we do.
